Philosophy

"Read my lips: Let's turn this ship!"

If ever there was a high-profile, clear-cut, up or down political promise that should not be broken, it was President George Bush's "Read my lips" promise not to raise taxes. It appeared to represent a commitment to smaller government. He broke it. That sealed my exit from the Republican Party.

I can't believe they are now running George II, while the Democrats are running the V.P. from what is apparently one of the most corrupt administrations in U.S. history. The Republicans and Democrats are ossified parties of the status quo: Big Government.

The root word of Libertarian is not "liberal", but rather "liberty". We need to return to our roots. We need genuine debate. We need the Party of Principle. We need to turn this ship around.

I agree with David Bergland, '84 Libertarian candidate for President, who wrote:

"Government should be limited to assisting the citizens in defending their rights against anyone who violates or threatens them. Therefore, laws which penalize such actions as murder, rape, robbery, fraud, arson, kidnapping, battery, trespass or pollution (a form of trespass) are valid uses of government force. ... By contrast, any activity which is peaceful, voluntary, and honest should not be penalized or subject to government interference."

Goals

I will place all legislation to come before me into two categories:
  1. If it decreases individual liberty, I will vote against it
  2. If it increases individual liberty, I will vote in favor of it, unless it encroaches on the rights of others
