Candidate Commitment

The LPCO has established some minimum requirements for Candidates. These requirements are not in lieu of existing legal requirements. Rather, they are established to ensure the quality of Candidates and Campaigns representing the LPCO. The LPCO is providing Ballot Access. The membership reserves the right to determine who uses the LPCO title. During recruitment, each Candidate will be asked as to the level of commitment they will make to the election process. During the subsequent paperwork process, the Candidate will be required to make a more formal declaration as to the level of effort the Candidate will provide.

As a Candidate for Public Office on the LPCO ticket you have the right to expect timely and accurate responses and assistance from the Board of Directors. It is the Candidate's responsibility to contact the appropriate Board member with questions, needs and/or concerns. We are not mind readers. No Candidate should expect financial assistance from the LPCO. Fundraising is the Candidate's responsibility.

The Campaigns Department has a website and top-notch webmaster. We will provide a website for you, if you wish. The Campaigns website has all official forms necessary to satisfy the legal requirements of the Secretary of State. Various training manuals are provided on this website.

Candidates are responsible for responding to the Media in a timely manner. This means returning phone calls, filling out questionnaires, and appearing at Forums to speak in public. The goal here is to ensure that no LPCO Candidate misses an opportunity to get our message out to the public. We can help with some of the questionnaires. This will lighten your workload a bit. We may be able to provide speakers for Forums that you are unable to attend. But it is your responsibility to be articulate, accessible and presentable. This means showing up, appropriately attired and representing the LPCO in a favorable way.

  • [    ]   Line Holder Candidate

I agree to support the growth of the Libertarian Party of Colorado by being a Candidate. I commit to serving as, and doing all things expected of a Line Holder Candidate. I recognize that a Line Holder Candidate is lowest form of commitment acceptable for a LPCO Candidate. I understand that a Line Holder Candidate:

    1. Commits to serve if elected.
    2. Does not accept a single dime in contributions (not even from Mom).
    3. Does not spend a single dime on their campaign (occasional phone calls and Xerox copying excepted).
    4. Files preprinted FCPA reports (i.e. they only need to be dated, signed, and mail/faxed), which essentially report items 1) and 2) according to the appropriate schedule. The LPCO will provide these forms to you.
    5. Provide the Party with a becoming "head shot" color photograph for use on the LPCO's web site. The LPCO will provide you with a website and photographer.
    6. Provide information necessary to complete a minimal web site; including a 100 word biographical sketch, three issues important to the Candidate, and a 50-100 word blurb on the Candidate's position on those issues.
    7. Complete and return the Voter Catalog questionnaires of the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News, and/or another major daily in the Candidate's locale.

  • [    ]   Information Candidate

I agree to support the growth of the Libertarian Party of Colorado by being a Candidate. I commit to serving as, and doing all things expected of an Information Candidate. I recognize that an Information Candidate is a more active form of commitment for a LPCO Candidate. I understand that an Information Candidate:

    5. Provide the party with a becoming "head shot" color photograph for use on the LPCO's web site. The LPCO will provide you with a website and photographer.
    6. Provide information necessary to complete a minimal web site; including a 100 word biographical sketch, three issues important to the Candidate, and a 50-100 word blurb on the Candidate's position on those issues, or supplies a link to the Candidate's own web site which provides informational content not less than that described here.
    7. Completes and returns questionnaires provided by all media organizations. (Questionnaires from special interest groups need not be completed or returned). Attends most all, (like at least 3 out of 4), Candidate Forums; and does so PROPERLY ATTIRED. Properly attired depends some what on the event, but usually means a collared shirt and tie as a minimum.
    8. Publishes an access phone number and e-mail address; and returns all phone calls and/or e-mail's within 24 hours. Again, this applies to major media, not necessarily to special interest groups.
    9. With the assistance of the Party, produces a press kit, and a brochure, and permission to the LPCO to reproduce and distribute same.

  • [    ]   Active Candidate

I agree to support the growth of the Libertarian Party of Colorado by being a Candidate. I commit to serving as, and doing all things expected of an Active Candidate. I recognize that an Active Candidate is the most active form of commitment for a LPCO Candidate and represents a substantial commitment. I understand that an Active Candidate:

    1. Commits to serve if elected.
    2. Forms and registers a Campaign Committee.
    3. Recruits a Treasurer and/or Campaign Manager to assist his/her campaign.
    4. Raises money from contributions.
    5. Spends contributed money (usually in the form of brochures, buttons, yard signs).
    6. Meets all the requirements of the Fair Campaign Practices Act (i.e. campaign finance reporting).
    7. Provides the party with a becoming "head shot" color photograph for use on the LPCO's web site. The LPCO will provide you with a website and photographer.
    8. Provides information necessary to complete a minimal web site; including a 100 word biographical sketch, three issues important to the Candidate, and a 50-100 word blurb on the Candidate's position on those issues, or supplies a link to the Candidate's own web site which provides informational content not less than that described here.
    9. Completes and returns questionnaires provided by all media organizations. (Questionnaires from special interest groups need not be completed or returned). Participates in all forums/events sponsored by major/local media; and does so PROPERLY ATTIRED. Properly attired depends some what on the event, but usually means a collared shirt and tie as a bare minimum.
    10. Attends most all, (like at least 3 out of 4), lesser Candidate Forums; and does so PROPERLY ATTIRED.
    11. Actively seeks out public speaking engagements, and/or properly prepares herself/himself for public speaking engagements which the Party may arrange for them.

I understand that the party's decision to nominate me as opposed to another, may be based on my statement above.

At convention, as each Candidate is nominated, the convention is advised as to their level of commitment. The convention can then nominate as it so wishes.
